Nearly two-thirds of Americans support the new full-body security-screening machines at the country's airports, as most say they put higher priority on combating terrorism than protecting personal privacy, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.Did you read that? Two-thirds support the full-body security-screening machines, fifty percent approve of the pat-downs, and only 3 percent ever receive the pat-downs, yet this seems to have become the new right-wing pet cause. Figures the right-wing fringe would take on a minority-held opinion and try to make it the overall narrative for the nation...
But half of all those polled say enhanced pat-down searches go too far.
The uproar over the new generation of security technology, and the frisking of those who refuse it, continued Monday with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano saying the new measures are necessary for public safety.
"There is a continued threat against aviation involving those who seek to smuggle powders and gels that can be used as explosives on airplanes," she said. "The new technology is designed to help us identify those individuals."
According to the Transportation Security Administration, less than 3 percent of travelers receive the pat-downs.

Body Scanners - Another Minority Position Held By The Minority Right-Wing
I thought this was interesting - despite all the criticisms coming from right-wing websites like Big Government (remember my article covering Chuck DeVore's statements regarding the TSA?), according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, a majority of Americans actually support the "naked body scanners."

Obama and the administration fell for another right-wing narrative switch. Instead of addressing the matter forcefully, members of the administration, like Obama and Clinton, responded slowly and with reason, giving the appearance that the right-wing narrative is the predominant opinion of all America.
ReplyDeleteObama should have responded like George W. Bush to silence the right wing - he should have stated that it is an inconvenience and that it is keeping America safe. If he really wanted to play dirty tricks, he should have said conservatives who are using this as a political tool are trying to make America less safe... sound familiar?
Perhaps the conservatives are setting us up to be unsafe, so that when something does happen they can go and say "it was on Obama and the Democrat's watch" and will no doubt have some other "flavor of the month" non-issue which will support them. And since Democrats don't play this blame game, they will miss the oppurtunity to say "this happened because of the Conservatives pushed unsafe practices on travel".
ReplyDeleteThe closer it happens to election time the better as republicans want the public to vote on emotion, and snap decision making rather than having all the facts presented to them over a longer period of time.
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Hannity prays every night for:
1)A refusal of the new TSA equipment/policies to happen now,
2)1 year and 10 months later a failed hijacking/accident happens which he can spin against Democrats on his "Palin/Beck 2012 Freedom Concert Tour".
Its not as crazy a conspiracy theory as you might imagine.
The Democrats play the "blame game" - just not the GOP's type of "blame game."

I give the TSA story line until January - once Christmas is over and holiday travel is done with, the conservatives will have no more need to scare people about security screenings...
