Now do you remember the criticisms conservatives made against the president?
They complained that the president was taking a vacation and wondered just why the president would make travel plans at a time of need.
Why do I mention all of the above?
It turns out that the new Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has turned down a flight on Air Force One - a personal invitation from the president to attend the funerals of the victims of the recent assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Gifford - to attend a reception for Wednesday night on behalf of Maria Cino, a former top House GOP aide who is seeking the Republican National Committee chairmanship.
John Bresnahan wrote the following for Politico:
Senior Democrats - who to date had been impressed with Boehner’s response to the Arizona tragedy - expressed surprise at what they saw as an unmistakable misstep by the new speaker: appearing at a partisan political event on the same night as the the president, first lady Michelle Obama, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Arizona congressional delegation come together at the memorial service for the victims of an attack that nearly took the life of a member of the House. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was critically wounded in Saturday’s attack, while six other people died and a dozen more were wounded.Isn't it nice that Boehner will finish his Cino speech before Obama's speech? Can you imagine if the situation was reversed? The Republicans would have claimed the president was some godless, insensitive jerk who had no desire to compromise with congressional conservatives.
“It is disrespectful for Speaker Boehner to skip joining the President’s and bipartisan congressional delegation to the Tucson Memorial so he could host a Washington D.C. cocktail party for RNC members,” said a Democratic leadership aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Boehner’s aides noted that the speaker will complete his remarks on Cino’s candidacy before Obama’s speech at the University of Arizona-sponsored memorial event.
Its nice that once the right-wing gets a taste of power they open the hypocrisy flood gates...
What do you expect? The Republican party is hamstrung by Rusty the Chickenhawk and the rest of the wingnuts. They have no choice but to refudiate anything Obama or risk a Tea party challenge. Seriously, where is Bob Dole when you need him? He met Daniel Inouye at the VA Hospital when they were both undergoing rehab from their horrible wounds. Who would have imagined they would be in Washington 25 years later. When John Ehrlichman went after Inouye in the Watergate hearings and asked him "what he knew about being an American", Dole was through with Nixon.

ReplyDeleteAlso, unrelated - you had made a comment about the 1993 GOP health care bill. I have been doing some research on that and noticed there are 5 republicans who co-sponsored that bill who are still representing their states. I will be making a post soon when they start up with their repeal bill...
